The Development of Fishing as a Pastime

Man has always fished and always will, as this is an essential source of nutrients, yet aside from the commercial side, fishing for the fun of it has long been a popular way to spend a weekend. While the equipment and techniques used might have changed over the centuries, man has long been casting his line into the water, purely for the enjoyment it brings.

A Wealthy Man’s hobby

Fishing for enjoyment really began in the 18th century, when wealthy European aristocrats cast their lines in splendid rivers and lakes. This would typically include fly fishing for trout and salmon, with large estates throughout England offering excellent game fishing for the British gentry. Of course, the catch would always be consumed later in the day, while the fishing was typically one activity of several that would be offered to estate guests, with grouse shooting and fox hunting also popular among the elite classes.

Working Class Anglers

After the First World War, working-class Englishmen took to fishing in their free time, with both rivers and canals lined with anglers during the weekends, and the feeling one has when surrounded by natural beauty adds to the experience. Piers and promenades around the coast of Great Britain were always popular fishing venues, as sea angling took off in the 1950s, and at around this time, Australians began to take part in recreational angling in both freshwater and sea environments. The Australian coastline offers some of the best fishing in the world, and with millions of anglers nationwide, fishing has never been more popular.

Technological Advances

As with everything else, fishing has reaped the benefits of technology, with carbon fibre fishing rods and reels that are engineered to perfection. Fishing line has become thinner and stronger, with monofilament solutions, and the fishing lures we use today are the result of many years of research, and such is the diversity of fishing equipment, you can purchase a rod that is designed specifically for the species of fish you are looking to catch. If Bass is your preferred species, there are a few tips and tricks on catching bass online, which is recommended reading for all novice bass anglers.

Catch and Release

While there are still people who eat the fish they catch, many fishing venues are strictly catching and releasing, which helps keep the fish population high, and learning how to safely return a fish to the water is an important aspect of fishing for recreation.
