Staying Positive in The Face of Adversity

When people say things like stay positive, they don’t always know how much energy that takes. When bad things are going on it can be tough to ‘stay positive.’ Rough times do happen in life, it could simply be that you are feeling a little bit meh, or it could be something a little more serious.

There are a few tricks that you can use actually to bring yourself to a more positive place.

Enjoy the small

When a lot is going on it can be hard to see and enjoy the little moments. Nevertheless, it is essential to try and see where those positive bits are. It might be that you are in the middle of lung cancer treatment, and a good day is feeling like you can take another day of treatments. When you are in the middle of something that feels all-consuming like chronic illness, it can be hard to do small things in the day.

Any of the following can be a small (or large) victory

  • Getting up
  • Washing your face
  • Replying to texts or emails
  • Getting dressed
  • Cleaning up

Remind yourself that anything you do that is something you felt like you couldn’t is a victory.

Meditate

Meditation doesn’t have to be a long drawn out situation. You can choose to set your alarm an extra 15 minutes early, sit up, close your eyes and think about all of the good stuff in your life. You can meditate on your family and the love you have for them, you can meditate on the peace you find in the early hours in the silence.

Meditation goes some way to reducing stress too. While you are in the meditative zone, don’t entertain negative ideas and emotions. Let them sail on by like a ship in the night. Lower stress levels will enable you to see things a little more positively.

You do you

We all have different interests. It might be that you love a facemask and reading a great book. It might be that you like to take a drive a night. It might even be that you enjoy collecting buttons. Whatever it is, make time for it.

The things that you love are important to you, and they make you who you are. If you aren’t leaving room for those types of thing, then you will start to feel like you have no time for yourself.

Doing the things you love can bring you back to a very particular comfortable space.

Quotes & Words

Oh, the cliche quotes that you find all over the internet, that some people seem to find a little annoying? Yes, those. Or you can dig a little deeper and see things that mean something to you. Look for people who can relate to your current situation and have those quotes saved somewhere.

You might find that listening to podcasts and watching TED talks have a similar relaxing and empowering ability.
