Protea Hotel Fire&Ice by Mariott – Menlyn

These days, finding affordable accommodation at a hotel can be a struggle. Especially if you want to experience a bit of luxury without breaking the bank. If you’re travelling to Pretoria, this could be just the place for you!

We only stayed for two nights as we were actually there to see Ed Sheeran’s performance at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. I didn’t get to take all the pictures I wanted to, so feel free to also visit Protea Hotel Fire and Ice by Mariott’s website for more.

Overview

All in all, this hotel has everything you need. With its modern design, decor and warm atmosphere, we were welcomed by amiable staff members.

Booking

We were delighted to have found a website that accepts Paypal for bookings of flights, hotels and so much more. We came across Expedia’s website a while ago and booked our hotel stay through them. It’s such a user-friendly website, and I would definitely make use of this site again in the future.

It’s not every day that you can pay for a hotel with Paypal here in South Africa, so this was definitely a highlight for me. We got a standard guest room on the 5th floor for two nights and it worked out to about $400. That is $400 we don’t have to pay tax on, by just paying directly from our Paypal account!

Arrival

Upon arrival, we were welcomed by friendly staff. The service was speedy and in no time we received our cards and we were on our way to our room. I was already impressed!

We only had hand luggage so we didn’t really need a trolley, but assistance was available all around. I also noticed a little welcome drink table, but we didn’t make use of that as we were quite tired.

Our Room – 531

The room that was allocated to us, was No. 531. I was quite happy with our room! With modern furniture and decor, it definitely lived up to the standards created by the entrance of the hotel. My favorite part of the room was the bed offcourse. Sleeping on a King Sized bed when you’re used to a double is the best thing ever when you’re wanting to get a good night’s rest!

Making the most of this amazing bed!
Our cute little mini-bar and coffee station. The mini-bar was unstocked, so we just ordered some drinks from room service to put in there.
The shower was nice and big, with enough clean, quality towels, soap and shampoo.

Room Service and The Food

The Room Service was 4 out of 5. They answered the phone promptly and our orders were taken by friendly staff members. However, they got our order wrong twice throughout our stay and switched sweet potato fries for plain fries, and a Castle Light for a Castle Lager. We didn’t feel the need to complain, so we just had whatever they brought.

Our dinner tray, ordered through Room Service

The food was presented nicely on our tray, with everything we needed including salt, pepper and tomato sauce. The tray was rounded off with a cute little succulent plant.

Blue Bull Burger: Beef patty with blue cheese, fig preserve and biltong. Served with sweet potato fries.
We had amazing adult milkshakes! One with Kahlua and one with Amarula.

Outdoor Vibe

With a pretty blue swimming pool, sun loungers and plenty of tables to sit at, the outdoor vibe was great. This hotel is a popular option for people wanting to host Birthday parties by the pool.

A snapshot from where I sat smoking.

With all the new smoking rules and regulatons in SA, there is only one smoking section in this whole hotel. That is where this picture was taken. There are a few tables, chairs and ashtrays for smokers in this shaded section.

Conclusion

All in all, this was a great experience! The hotel is just across the road from Menlyn Mall, one of the largest malls in South Africa. They have some international chains there such as Krispy Kreme, Starbucks and Popeyes.

If you’re looking for affordable, luxury accommodation in Johannesburg, this hotel will definitely pique your interest.
