Health and Wellbeing: The Influence Of Our Homes

Clean spaces

We’re all looking for ways to improve our health and wellbeing. Of course, that means making changes in all areas of your life. Although eating a better diet and exercising more are the two obvious ones, there are a lot of things to be considered. Most of us don’t tend to think about our home environment in terms of health, we’ll be surprised. Your surroundings can actually have a big impact on your physical and mental health so it’s important that you keep it in mind when you’re decorating and organizing your home.

These are just some of the changes you could make around your home to improve your overall health and wellbeing.

Organization – The key to improved health and wellbeing

A disorganized home creates a lot of stress and that seriously impacts your mental well being. If you can organize your home better, you’ll find that your stress levels reduce and you’ll be happier and healthier overall. Trying to live a more conscious lifestyle, especially when you’re buying things, will really help you here. Instead of just buying things for the sake of it, think about whether they add anything to health or wellbeing. If they don’t, you don’t need them. Making more conscious decisions about planning your home and your schedule will also help to reduce your stress levels. In return, it makes it easier to stick to good practices like healthy eating and exercise. Try organizing and decorating your bedroom. There is nothing as refreshing as waking up to a blissful bedroom in the mornings!

Plants: The Effect they can have on your health and wellbeing

Adding some plants and flowers around the home is a simple change that has a big effect. Studies show that having plants around can boost your mood and reduce stress levels, which is important for your health and well being. If you buy some fresh flowers once a week and keep them in your home, they make it a more inviting place to be and improve your overall mood. Having other plants in the home will also help to clean the air. This is incredibly important because indoor air pollution is often a lot worse than it is outside and if you don’t do anything to combat it, it could lead to health problems in the future.

Natural Light

Vitamin D deficiency is such a common problem for people these days because so many of us spend all day in the office and then all night in the house, so we hardly get any sunlight.

It’s important that you think about this around the home. Make sure that you’re keeping the curtains open all of the time. This will ensure getting more natural light in during the day. You should also rearrange furniture to improve the flow of sunlight in the home. If you’ve got rooms where you don’t get much sunlight, there are a few things you could try. One of them is to put a few mirrors around to help boost the light levels in there.

Cleaning

Nobody likes cleaning but if you want to stay healthy, it’s important. If you’re not cleaning the house properly, there will be lots of bacteria everywhere. That means you’re more likely to get sick. Make sure that you’re using a good antibacterial cleaner and you’re getting into the areas that people usually forget. Places like this include the top of kitchen cupboards or behind the toilet.

If you don’t consider your health and well being when it comes to your home, it’s a lot harder to stay happy and healthy.

Hey, all of this is so true! I’ve been thinking of redecorating my whole apartment and have it all painted in neutral colours, which help us be relaxed. That’ll be easy peasy since my partner is a painter! Only that he needs to find the time to do so.
On the other hand, I’m SO bad at keeping my plants alive. I always forget to water them and when I do they’re already half-dead… Poor little things.
This was a great post, indeed.

Hi Norma! Well, you’re lucky your S.O is a painter – hopefully, he can find some time to paint the house, I think neutral colours would look lovely. With regards to plants, maybe you should consider growing a few succulents? They are quite easy to grow from seed and don’t require direct sunlight. It also won’t be a problem if you forget to water them, as they don’t need much water. They only need a spoon of water every week! You can check out our online store if you want, we sell the seeds. It’s https://mesembseeds.com. Thank you for reading!

I love living in an organised home. It just makes me feel better and more comfortable. I don’t feel as stressed! I also think that natural light is so important. I love the outdoors and hvjng natural light makes me feel like I’m outside, even in winter! I grew up with allot of plants in the house, and that is something that I did when I moved out. It is nice having plants to look after and they just make things look nice too!

Plants are lovely! Some houses don’t have as much natural light as one would want, but plants can help bring nature into your home to still give it a relaxing vibe. Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post xx

Great post! My wife and I are both oblivious when it comes to home decor. Yet, I do think we should make more of an effort to create the environment we want in each room. I love our bedroom because it lacks clutter. However, we could do so much more to create conducive office space. Your post has really helped convince me that we should pay more attention to how our gone environment is impacting our well being. Thanks for sharing!
