Menopause – Are you ready?



The term every woman dreads. As women, we’d like to think we’ll be young and flawless forever, and that Menopause will not come around until we’re much older.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The more we make peace with the fact that our bodies are ever changing, the happier we’ll be.

In order to make peace with all these changes, we need to educate ourselves to gain a better understanding of what is happening, and why.

Not one woman’s experience is the same, and so the subject of Menopause is a vast topic full of grey areas. There are, however, some FAQ’s which I will be covering in this post. I, myself, am only 29 years of age, so this post is purely based on research in order to educate myself and my readers.

What is Menopause?

Menopause is merely the stage in a woman’s life when she stops menstruating. The term ‘Menopause’ refers to any changes we might experience before, during or after we’ve stopped menstruation. This marks the end of a woman’s reproductive period.

Menopause after the age of 40 is considered “Normal Menopause” as it’s occurring due to natural stages of human life. It is, however, possible that women can start experiencing Menopause at a younger age, due to the following possible reasons:

  • Results of surgery,  Eg. Hysterectomy
  • Damage to ovaries, Eg. Chemotherapy / Radiation


What happens during Menopause?

Natural Menopause is a gradual process and has 3 stages:


This stage typically begins several years before Menopause. Ovaries start producing less Estrogen until menstruation stops completely.


This would be more or less a year after a woman had her last normal period. Ovaries have stopped releasing eggs and making most of their Estrogen.


These are the years after Menopause. The symptoms of Menopause will start easing in most women, but health risks are still present due to the drop in Estrogen levels.


Signs and symptoms of Perimenopause:

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Mood swings
  • Urinary urgency
  • Urine leakage when coughing/sneezing
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Irregular periods
  • Lower sex drive
  • Fatigue
  • Hot flushes
  • Breast tenderness
  • Worse PMS
  • Weight gain


How can symptoms of Menopause be treated?

  • Hormone Therapy
  • Low-dose antidepressants
  • Red Clover – Helps for hot flushes
  • Drink enough water
  • Take a Calcium and Vitamin D Supplement
  • Ensure sufficient Iron intake
  • Apple Cider Vinegar in water – Helps for hot flushes
  • Sufficient intake of foods high in Estrogen (Flax seeds, Fruit, Veg, Soy Products, Olives and Chickpeas)




Upon finishing research, I felt both scared and content at the same time. Scared of all the changes I might experience in the future, but content as I am now more educated on what’s to come and therefore feel more prepared. I know I will be able to take it as it comes and make informed decisions when I am approached by this terrible thing called Menopause.

    Nice intro to a very complex time of change for us women. I went into perimenopause early – 32 – eiks!! And I was only then considering the possibility of haveing a first child now that I found a partner that I felt would be a great father. Everything works out for a reason – I accepted the changes with the support of my partner as well as a professional in the field of female hormones. Best advice is to consult with various types of professionals, read and educate yourself and your particular conditions (uterus/no uterus etc) and then make up your own mind as to how you plan (short term and long term) as to how are going to cope. My Mom had NO menopausal symptoms with the exception of her menstrual flow had stopped. I had all the symptoms! I can say nutrition and mind/body exercises do help besides other lifestyle adaptions you may have to consider.
