So, here we are, officially one month after I’ve started my blog!
Starting my blog could possibly have been one of the most fulfilling things I have done. EVER! I just love everything about it, from researching my topics to engaging with other bloggers. I have learnt so much this month, and I know I still have a lot of learning ahead of me. I didn’t do any research before starting my blog. I’ve been contemplating a lot on whether or not to start blogging, but only because I wanted an outlet for writing and for my love of learning. I never did actual research on blogs or how to start one. One night it just came to me, and I decided to start a blog.
My first month of blogging and what I’ve learnt:
When I decided to start my blog, I didn’t know ANYTHING about blogging or how to create one. I didn’t know that there was a difference between hosted and self-hosted. So, first thing I did was a Google search on ‘Blogging Platforms”. I went with WordPress and created my blog within one night. Easy right?..
I started posting and soon decided that I am going to pursue this blogging thing, so I did some research on upgrading to a paid plan on WordPress. I was advised to go ‘self-hosted through WordPress’, rather than upgrade. Great advice, but I wasn’t familiar with self-hosting and what it meant. Again, Google came to my rescue and soon I went with Byethost.. Free self-hosting domains that you can link to WordPress. Wasn’t this just the coolest, I didn’t even have to pay for anything! I was so excited and started creating my new site immediately. Little did I know that I have another disappointment coming my way.
SSL – Certification
When clicking through to my site, a warning window popped up to say my site is not secure… I had no idea how to fix this and started learning about SSL-certificates that was needed to secure your site. I went through A LOT of ‘free SSL- certificate websites’, only to be disappointed again and again.
In the end, I bought a domain name through Go Daddy at a special price. It included the domain name and self-hosting. I also bought a standard SSL certificate for my site and it doesn’t give the pop up anymore, but still does not show that my site is secured. I am currently still working on this and hope that I can figure this out in my 2nd month of blogging. If you have any advice, feel free to drop me a comment!
I wrote about 3 posts and thought it was great, until my partner suggested that I add a personal touch to my posts. I welcomed that constructive criticism and started to add my personal opinions to my posts. It has worked out great for me and I am thankful that my partner is honest enough to approach me with new suggestions on being a better blogger.
Engaging with other bloggers
I had twitter before I started my blog and absolutely hated it. I thought it was such a waste of time and preferred Facebook.
After starting my blog, I opened social media accounts for it and decided to open a Twitter account as well. At first I didn’t quite know what I was doing, but I started following any blog accounts I could find. From RT Accounts to Blog support accounts, I followed them. Not long after that did I start gaining followers, and I was overwhelmed by the support of the blogging community – a community I never thought existed! I try to engage in as must threads as I can, and always try to return the love on other peoples blogs. I just LOVE twitter now, and can’t even remember when last I’ve actually been on Facebook.
As for Instagram, I don’t have the hang of it yet. For my personal account I just used it to edit pictures and share, nothing more. As I began to explore other bloggers’ Instagram profiles, I realized that they actually have these ’round buttons on their profiles that link to different things.. I have no idea how to get that, so if you have any advice, please leave me a comment!

Although this might not seem much, I think it’s pretty impressive for my first month, and I am hopeful that my blog will be even more successful in the future! I’ve found that engaging on social media is of utmost importance if you want to grow your blog. This might be time consuming, but making time for this whenever and wherever I can has really helped me and my blog grow.
Thank you for each and every follow, Retweet and comment on both my blog and on Twitter, I am grateful to be part of the blogging community.
